1) Eat

You read it right…Eat! A slow metabolism can and will increase the more you eat and the more frequently you eat.

Now you can not sit down to a meal of french fries and hot dogs all day and expect to lose weight. But, with a healthy diet in place with moderate amounts of protein, you are on your way to a livelier metabolism.

Spread those meals out over 5-7 smaller feedings throughout the day and you will feel your body firing up that internal furnace called your metabolism.

You see…your body will burn smaller meals similar to how a fire burns wood. Throwing a high calorie meal in your body is like throwing a big oak log on a small fire. It will simply smother the fire out.

On the other hand, if you put several smaller meals in your body throughout the day, it is like putting kindling on a fire….you are providing a quick burning fuel for immediate heat!

Small frequent meals keep your fire (metabolism) burning, whereas big logs (meals) smother out the fire and initiate little heat production. We are looking for maximum heat. Turning up your body’s “heat” is easy to do with small frequent meals.

2) Exercise.

“More calories out vs. calories in.” That is the basic underlying principle, but there are many other factors that come into play. We will keep this simple.

Roughly 40-50 calories per pound of muscle is an estimate on how many calories your body requires per day to sustain it. That might not sound like much, but what if you added 5-10 lbs of lean muscle to your body? Bumping your potential to burn up to 200-500 additional calories each day. That is a lot of extra calories! Especially when that happens naturally from having higher muscle mass levels and no additional activity is required….bonus!

The best way to build calorie burning muscle is with resistance exercise…a.k.a. weight training. You should make it a point to add resistance training to your overall exercise program. Resistance exercise will support your metabolic rate far better than other forms of exercise.

By using moderate to heavy weights, you will have elevated your resting metabolic rate. It is estimated that your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is responsible for roughly 60-70% of your daily energy expenditure. Anything you can do to elevate your RMR will have the greatest net effect on your fat loss efforts. Weight training has the biggest “bang” for the buck from an exercise stand point.

Cardiovascular exercise will also help elevate a slow metabolism. Your body will continue to burn additional calories, sometimes hours after you have finished your workout. The more intense (effort) your workout is, the longer your metabolism will continue burning calories at an accelerated rate.

Crank up the effort level of your exercise program and see what happens to your slow metabolism. You should begin to notice positive changes to your metabolic rate within a few weeks of applying proper nutrition and a resistance based exercise program. Incorporate some cardiovascular intervals, like fitness boot camp training, to the mix when you are ready and the skies the limit.

Make sure to eat a basic nutrient dense diet with sufficient amounts of protein through out the day. Increasing meal frequency will ignite a slow metabolism.

So what sort of exercises should we do anyway? You wanna learn to run fast? You gonna do some bench and call it a day? Nope I didn’t think so. Hey, bench is a great exercises, but it’s not the right one for this goal. We’re here to find out what’s the best way to get your muscles big, and fast!

Let’s think about it. What should we do if the goal is to gain muscle and put on some solid weight? The best exercises are called comprehensive exercises. Why waste time doing lots of small ones when we can get better results with one big exercise right?

We’ve got about a 1 hour window (probably more like 45 minutes) where we can warm up, workout and warm down before our body starts turning from a muscle building machine, into a muscle BURNING machine. We don’t want to burn out muscles. So we want to get as much muscle work done within this time as possible. And the secret is the Comprehensive Exercise.

The Best Exercise List

These are the best exercises you can do to to work out and gain muscle fast. When you do these movements, instead of smaller movements, you’ll workout your whole body in less time and make better gains.

# Full Standing Squats

# Flat Bench

# Stiff Leg Deadlifts

# Military Press

# Bent Rows

# Chin Ups (Cant do chins? Do Lat Pull Downs)

# Dips (if you can’t do dips do Decline Dumbell Bench Press with your hands facing each other)

These last two exercises are optional because the other exercises are so comprehensive that you’ve already worked out your entire body! Do them if you’ve still got time and energy during your workouts.

Do at least 3 workouts each week, and make sure you do squats during every workout. They’re the foundation of your body and they’re the largest muscles too. Working them out hard will stimulate your body to produce testosterone more efficiently.

On that note: WORK HARD. These exercises are POWERFUL. So don’t mess with them. Do the exercises and do them with intensity. Lift between 5-7 reps, and do 3 sets each. Lift as much as you can and get someone to spot for you if you’re not confident to start. But make sure you do the work yourself. No slacking!
