Mother’s Day is Wonderful Worldwide
The Mother’s Day holiday is quite familiar to most people as an occasion of commemorating the love and appreciation felt for mommies everywhere. More & more typically this also means celebrating the people in our lives who have been like mothers to us as well. Mother’s Day is celebrated at various times between cultures, and this happens for number of reasons; here are some quick facts about the observance of Mothers Day at home and abroad!
The celebrations of the present- day U.S. & many other countries date back to an essay penned by Julia Ward Howe in the 1870s, & later when Anna Jarvis promoted setting an official holiday in the early 1900s. The earliest origins of the modern Mothers Day, however, may lie in the society of the ancient Greeks. The Greeks held a festival in those days that functioned to honor mother goddesses, & human mothers by extension, every year around the spring equinox. After the Romans took power later on, they continued this tradition.
In the United Kingdom, the date on which Mother’s Day is well known each year is related to the timing of Lent, whereas Canada and the United States always celebrate the 2nd Sunday of May. The 2nd Sunday of May is, in fact, the choice of 82 different countries on six continents– this is every continent with a native population. Overall, May is by far the most popular month in which to set Mother’s Day, with 104 countries choosing to celebrate sometime during the fifth month.
In other nations such as Bulgaria and Ukraine, Mother’s Day celebrations take place on March 8th to coincide with the observance of International Women’s Day. Still other locations, including Egypt, observe Mothers’ Day on March 21, the spring equinox; this may just be a throwback to the original festivities so many centuries ago. In the same way, other days are frequently picked to coincide with the local culture’s established festivities of mothers, much like many other well known holidays.
Mother’s Days in many countries are considerable gift-giving occasions, and there can be a lot of pressure to put together the definite perfect gift. Jewelry is always a safe bet, & there are many options of special mother’s rings and other mother’s jewelry available, which is customized with the birthstone of each child.

Mexican Train Dominos and Other Fun Family Games
Growing up, I loved it when our family game time came around. We’d all gather around the table with snacks and drinks and play Hearts. Those times have a special place in my memories.
Those were good times because of the way it pulled us all back in as a family. My husband also had a similar experiences in his family so we both were in agreement that we wanted to continue this tradition with our family.
The problem we soon found was how to find games that everyone could play. With an age span of 7 years, our 15 year old was not so keen in playing Go Fish all the time, nor could our 8 year old play Risk. How do we solve this dilemma?
The Survey Says – The Solutions
So you weren’t really expecting me to not have a few ideas here, were you? I do. Starting with the game we learned on our last family vacation – Mexican Train Dominoes. We all could play it together – important with the size of our family – and it was fun. Plus the dominoes rules for Mexican Train aren’t hard to learn. We did find after buying the inexpensive game that the rules in the game were not the same as the ones we learned. Find the “Hellstrom” domino rules on the website listed below.
Along with our Mexican Train dominos game, we found Apples to Apples. This game too can be played by all of us at the same time and we liked that it came in a junior version that was still fun for the older kids.
And for Christmas last year, Grandma bought a tile game called Blokus. It does involve some critical thinking skills, but our 7 yr. old was able to pick it up right away. It is only a 4-player game.
These are great Christmas gift ideas and birthday present ideas because they are inexpensive and they don’t involve technology. Which means more time to talk and laugh together! What good Christmas gifts!
